STEEL VESSELS RUST FROM THE INSIDE OUT
OYD engineers its structures to minimize corrosion inside steel hulls. Our steel structural system is a paradygm shift from the norm. It is void of local, longitudinals (as shown on the previous page) in the innerbottom framing as on our aluminum vessels.
Using smaller, longitudinal stiffeners in the innerbottom of a steel vessel is completely illogical from a longevity and maintenance standpoint. This builds in thousands of places for corrosion to form.
Our non-oil tanks are fully welded, including the flanges on the ring frames which completely seal the structure. This eliminates the potential for corrosion to start between the frame and plate.
If it were only intermittant welded, as commonly found on many steel vessels, corrosion occurs quickly in these areas. The coating system cannot be fully effective unless the structure is completely sealed by weld beforehand. If the vessel is not built in this manner, this problem becomes apparent several years down the road - long after the builder's warranty expires. This often results in premature replating of the hull bottom.
All chain lockers on our steel vessels are constructed entirely of 316L stainless steel
Typical wrapped end weld on non-tight swash bulkhead. All framing in non-oil tanks are fully seal welded to reduce corrosion potential.

EXTERIOR LONGEVITY
As standard on our steel vessels, all exterior bulwark frames, bulwark cap plates, rubrails, chain lockers, anchor pockets and deck insert plates are fabricated from 316L stainless steel.
Exposed areas are given special attention with the choice of materials and welding technique. This reduces maintenance and increases the vessel's longevity. The quality of the production and materials used on our yachts becomes more apparent, and appreciated, over time.
